A Glimpse into Stromford and the Bauk

The Witcher 4 Unveils New Regions and MonstersFollowing the Game Awards 2024, Gamertag Radio's Parris spoke with The Witcher 4's director, Sebastian Kalemba, and executive producer, Gosia Mitręga. The conversation revealed that players will explore uncharted territories and encounter a host of never-before-seen creatures.

The mysterious village showcased in the reveal trailer has been identified as Stromford, a place where unsettling rituals involving young girls are performed to appease a fearsome entity.

That entity, the "god" worshipped by the villagers, is a formidable monster named Bauk, inspired by Serbian mythology. Kalemba described Bauk as a "tricky bastard" that instills genuine terror in its victims. And Bauk isn't alone; players can expect a plethora of new monsters to challenge them throughout their adventure.

A subsequent interview with Skill UP on December 15, 2024, confirmed that The Witcher 4's map will be roughly comparable in size to The Witcher 3. Given Stromford's location in the far north, it's clear Ciri's journey will take her far beyond the regions explored by Geralt.

Enhanced NPCs: A New Level of Immersion

The Witcher 4 Unveils New Regions and MonstersThe Gamertag Radio interview also shed light on significant advancements in NPC design. Parris noted the noticeable diversity in the Witcher 4 trailer, a stark contrast to the reused models in The Witcher 3. Kalemba confirmed that the team is striving to give "every single NPC" a unique life and backstory. The close-knit nature of a secluded village like Stromford will influence how these NPCs interact with Ciri and other characters.

The Witcher 4 Unveils New Regions and MonstersCD Projekt Red is also enhancing the visual fidelity, behavior, and facial expressions of NPCs, aiming for an even more immersive experience than its predecessors. While details are scarce, it promises a richer, more interactive world for players.
