Assassin's Creed Shadows: Parkour Mechanics Revised
Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch on February 14th. This latest installment introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system and character design.
The game features a redesigned parkour system, moving away from the free-climbing mechanics of previous titles. Instead, players will navigate specifically designed "parkour highways," offering a more structured yet potentially more fluid climbing experience. While this might seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. Seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, enhance the overall parkour flow. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding further dynamism. These changes, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allowed for more controlled level design, particularly differentiating the movement capabilities of the two protagonists.
Speaking of protagonists, Shadows introduces a dual-protagonist system: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and shadow maneuvering; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but with limited climbing abilities. This design caters to both fans of classic stealth gameplay and those who prefer the RPG-style combat seen in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
The shift in parkour design, while initially perceived as limiting, aims to create more engaging and thoughtfully designed pathways. The inclusion of a grappling hook further expands traversal options. While players won't be able to scale every surface, finding the correct entry points will become a key element of gameplay.
With its unique setting, dual protagonists, and revamped parkour system, Assassin's Creed Shadows promises a fresh take on the franchise. The game's launch in February will be a significant test, competing with other highly anticipated titles. The coming weeks should reveal further details from Ubisoft as the release date approaches.
