Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment

What excites Monster Hunter players? Many cite the thrill of crafting powerful equipment from hard-earned monster materials. The satisfaction of a complete armor set and matching weapon, honed through countless hunts, is a core element of the series' appeal.

The Monster Hunter series has always centered on this concept: conquer monsters, then wield their power. Players use their skill to defeat formidable beasts, transforming those beasts' strengths into their own.

In an IGN interview, Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka explained the equipment design philosophy: "While our designs have broadened, we were once very mindful of the idea that Rathalos equipment should make you look like Rathalos." Wilds introduces new monsters, each with unique, vibrant equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-themed monster, boasts head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (seen in the hunt video below).

However, the developers emphasize the significance of the starting equipment. Fujioka stated, "I designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch—a first for me. Previously, new hunters started with basic weapons. But our protagonist is a chosen hunter; plain weapons wouldn't fit. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel exceptional."

Director Yuya Tokuda added, "In World, weapon designs were largely consistent, with variations based on materials. In Wilds, each weapon has a unique design." This reflects the story: the player is a seasoned hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, also reflects this experienced status.

The Hope set, a deep emerald green, forms a hooded long coat when complete. Fujioka detailed the design process: "We dedicated more effort to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games had separate upper and lower armor; we couldn't create a coat. But I wanted a flowing hooded coat. We achieved this by investing significant resources. While players will discover diverse equipment, we wanted the Hope set to be stylish yet understated."

Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are designed to represent a truly exceptional hunter. We eagerly await the full game to appreciate their details fully.
