George R. R. Martin Discusses Potential Elden Ring Movie at IGN Fan Fest 2025
George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate world of Westeros and the visionary who co-created the universe of FromSoftware's blockbuster game, Elden Ring, has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie. In a recent chat with IGN during IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin tantalized fans with the news that discussions about bringing the game to the big screen are underway. However, he remained coy about the project, stating, "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring."
This isn't the first time Martin has dropped hints about a potential Elden Ring adaptation. FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to the idea, albeit with a crucial condition. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki explained, "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium." He emphasized the need for a "very strong partner" to bring such a project to life, stressing the importance of trust and shared vision in any collaboration.
Despite the excitement around an Elden Ring movie, Martin revealed a significant hurdle to his involvement: his ongoing commitment to The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Addressing his delayed progress, Martin confessed to IGN, "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for The Winds of Winter has been agonizingly long for fans, with the last book, A Dance With Dragons, released in 2011—the same year HBO debuted the wildly successful Game of Thrones series. Martin has openly acknowledged the delays, humorously lamenting, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time." Yet, he remains determined, asserting that finishing the book remains a priority despite skepticism from some quarters.
As for his contribution to Elden Ring, Martin shared insights into his worldbuilding process with IGN. He explained how FromSoftware sought his expertise to flesh out the game's backstory, stating, "when they came to me, FromSoftware, they wanted the world... So where did that world come from? And I've done a lot of world building, most notably on Westeros and the backgrounds of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones." Martin's work on the game's lore, including the history of magic and runes, was a collaborative effort that involved multiple sessions with the FromSoftware team.
When asked if all his material was used in the game, Martin noted that, as with any expansive fantasy world, there's always more to the story than what appears on screen. He likened it to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, where vast histories precede the main narrative, suggesting that there's plenty of untapped material that could be explored in future Elden Ring projects.
