Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared insights into his experience with the Nintendo PlayStation prototype, including playing a nearly completed game intended for the unreleased console. In an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida recounted his career at Sony, which began in February 1993 when he joined Ken Kutaragi's team. This was during the development of the original PlayStation, which eventually hit the market. However, new team members, including Yoshida, were also introduced to the Nintendo PlayStation prototype.

"Everybody who joined [Ken Kutaragi]'s team around that time, the first thing they showed us was that Nintendo Sony PlayStation, like a prototype already working," Yoshida revealed. "And also they had almost finished a game on it. And I got to play the game on the system, the day I joined."

Yoshida described the game as a space shooter, drawing comparisons to the Sega CD title Silpheed, which streamed assets from a CD. He couldn't recall the developer or the country where it was made, but he hinted at the possibility that the game might still exist in Sony's archives. "I wouldn't be surprised," Yoshida said. "You know, it was like a CD, so… yeah."

The Nintendo PlayStation remains a highly sought-after rarity due to its unreleased status, representing a fascinating "what-if" scenario in the histories of both Nintendo and Sony. The prototype has garnered significant interest in auctions and among collectors. The prospect of seeing Sony's space-shooter game for the Nintendo PlayStation released is intriguing, especially given precedents like Nintendo's release of Star Fox 2 years after its cancellation. This raises the possibility that this unique piece of gaming history could one day be shared with the world.
