Disney Unveils Exciting Park Transformation for May
Disneyland and Walt Disney World are revamping their Genie+ ride reservation system, effective July 2024. This significant update will allow guests to book Lightning Lane reservations in advance, significantly altering the current day-of booking process. The system will be rebranded as "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," with individual ride selections termed "Lightning Lane Single Pass."
The current Genie+, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, allows guests to manage reservations through a mobile app. This app also facilitates paid Lightning Lane bookings for expedited access to attractions. The system has faced criticism for its paid nature and same-day booking requirement.
The upcoming changes, announced on the Disney Parks Blog, address these concerns. Resort guests can book up to seven days prior to arrival, while other guests can reserve up to three days ahead. While Disneyland will primarily see the name change, Walt Disney World will experience the full impact of advanced booking capabilities. This combines elements of Genie+ and the former FastPass+ system, enabling pre-vacation planning and eliminating on-site booking stress.
All existing Genie+ attractions will remain under the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, including the soon-to-open Tiana's Bayou Adventure (June 28th at Disney World). The Virtual Queue system, utilized for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, will remain unchanged.
Disney's response to guest feedback suggests a move towards greater guest satisfaction. The advanced booking option promises smoother park visits, especially beneficial during peak seasons and special events. However, the long-term effectiveness and guest reception of these changes remain to be seen.
