Navigating Political Intrigue in The Living Lands
In a recent interview with Game Developer, Avowed's game director, Carrie Patel, shed light on the game's intricate design. She emphasized the game's focus on player agency, stating that every decision, no matter how small, contributes to a unique and personalized experience. "It's about giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," Patel explained. "You slow down and try to notice each moment of your experience...When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane? What's drawing me from moment to moment?"Patel highlighted the significance of player choices in shaping the narrative, particularly within the politically charged region of The Living Lands. The outcomes, she explained, are deeply intertwined with exploration and discovery within Eora's rich world. "I've enjoyed finding the stories that thread both of those worlds together," she added.

Players take on the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Giving players things to dig into—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel noted. "It's about who you want to be in this world, and how these situations prepare you to express that."
Beyond the rich RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities you can scope into and the weapon loadouts you can choose give you a very different experience each time you play," Patel confirmed.
In a separate interview with IGN, Patel revealed the game boasts a multitude of endings, resulting from the cumulative effect of player choices. "I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them," she stated. "This is an Obsidian game, so your ending really is the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it."
