Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Get Some Nintendo Store Restrictions, Presumably to Thwart Scalpers

The eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be one of the most sought-after gaming consoles of the year. To ensure that dedicated fans get their hands on the new system, Nintendo is rolling out a strategic pre-order process through the My Nintendo Store.

On the My Nintendo Store, those with a Nintendo Account can register their interest in pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Once your turn comes up, you'll receive an invitation email, which remains valid for 72 hours. However, there's a twist—you need to have demonstrated your commitment to the Nintendo ecosystem. According to the fine print on the site, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025."

Nintendo has made it clear that these invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email address linked to the Nintendo Account that registered interest. There's a one-per-account limit during the invitation period for both the system and each accessory. Currently, you can express interest in either a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

Once you've secured your pre-order, your order will be shipped after purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo specifies, "Please note that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times." These measures seem designed to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 ends up in the hands of genuine fans rather than scalpers looking to resell it online.

The issue of scalping has plagued many high-demand product launches, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve successfully implemented a queue system for the Steam Deck, linking purchases to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates. It's not surprising to see Nintendo adopting similar tactics with the My Nintendo Store process.

While there will undoubtedly be other avenues to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2, this method offers hope to long-time Switch 1 owners, helping them navigate the potential chaos of securing a launch day pre-order.
