The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the middle. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains all the beloved features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen that serves as a touchpad. You can even play games outside your home, provided you have access to a stable and fast internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to operate.
Update: You no longer need a PS5 to play games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a feature allowing you to stream games directly from their PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means you can access over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, without needing a PS5. You can choose to connect the Portal to your PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers. Note that you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 a month, a much more appealing option compared to spending $500 on a console and an additional $70 per game.
It's worth noting that the PlayStation Portal isn't the only way to stream your PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home. You can achieve similar functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device, including other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting this up is more complicated, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy**
"The PlayStation Portal is a surprisingly delightful device that exceeded my initial skepticism. It offers a superior experience compared to using a phone with a clip-on controller and works far better than I anticipated. The freedom to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage is invaluable, especially when the TV is occupied by family playing the Switch. However, keep in mind that it's not a standalone device and requires a PlayStation 5 to function. The main drawbacks are the lack of support for WiFi that requires a web browser to log in and the absence of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these caveats, it's an excellent solution for PlayStation Remote Play and nearly a must-have for PS5 owners who enjoy handheld gaming or need to share the household TV."
