Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, was announced at The Game Awards, sparking immense excitement among fans. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads shed some light on the upcoming title.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. When pressed about the identity of the character shown in the TGA trailer (widely assumed to be Amaterasu), director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder...", while Hirabayashi confirmed it was indeed the sun goddess.

While not surprising to fans, the sequel's development raises questions about the previous installment, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews due to its platform and the absence of key original team members, including Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the mixed reception of Ōkamiden, stating that the new sequel will directly continue the story from the original Ōkami.

The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflicts and challenges.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by excitement. According to Hirabayashi, substantial updates are not expected anytime soon.
