Travis Willingham Confirms: Critical Role Video Game Announcement Imminent

The popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the brink of unveiling its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day." In an interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe are still under wraps, Willingham confirmed that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham elaborated on the game, saying, "They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests an interactive experience where players can influence the narrative within the expansive Exandria universe.

Travis Willingham, an actor and one of the stars of Critical Role, co-founded the company with other well-known voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its start, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe of ideas, with the Amazon Prime Video series Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina being one of its most successful projects.

The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects but won't necessarily be a direct continuation of any of them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It remains uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce an original story within the Exandria world.

Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we're now into the third month of 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham also shared insights on their approach to game development with Rolling Stone, stating, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While a specific release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be announced, fans can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
