Konami Wanted To Reach A Wider Audience
Suikoden's latest venture, Suikoden STAR LEAP, promises to deliver a gaming experience akin to that of a console game. In a revealing interview with Famitsu on March 4, 2025, the developers behind Star Leap shared their vision and approach to the game's development.
Star Leap's Producer, Shinya Fujimatsu, explained the decision to target the mobile platform, stating, "Our goal was to make Suikoden accessible to as many people as possible. Mobile gaming was the natural choice for its ease of access. However, we are committed to ensuring that Star Leap retains the essence and soul of Suikoden, which is why we're tackling it as a mainline entry."
The development team is dedicated to merging the high-quality visuals, immersive soundscapes, and compelling narratives typical of console games with the convenience of mobile gaming.
Expressing Suikoden in STAR LEAP
Fujimatsu highlighted the essence of Suikoden, emphasizing the series' unique blend of war themes and the celebration of friendship. He stated, "In Suikoden STAR LEAP, it's crucial to capture the essence of Suikoden Genso by telling the story of the new 108 stars."
Director Yoshiki Meng Shan further elaborated on the series' characteristics, noting its ability to balance light-hearted moments of camaraderie with more serious scenes. He added, "Another defining feature is the battle tempo, where multiple characters collaborate in combat, a hallmark of Suikoden."
Both a Sequel and a Prequel to the Series
Suikoden STAR LEAP is set to weave through different timelines, serving as both a sequel and prequel to the series. It will start two years before the events of the original Suikoden and span across various eras, integrating into the official history of the Suikoden series.
Fujimatsu expressed enthusiasm about the game's quality, saying, "We've designed Star Leap to be welcoming even for newcomers to the series. With its mobile format, it's easy to dive into the story and gameplay, making it the perfect entry point into 'Suikoden Genso'."
Meng Shan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team's commitment to upholding the series' reputation: "As one of Japan's premier RPG series, Suikoden STAR LEAP has been meticulously crafted in terms of story, graphics, battle systems, sound, and training mechanics to honor its legacy. We eagerly await your feedback upon its release."
Suikoden STAR LEAP was unveiled during the Suikoden Live broadcast on March 4, 2025, alongside other exciting announcements for the franchise. The game is in development for iOS and Android platforms, though no official release date has been announced yet.
