Splatoon 4: Sequel Whispers After Final Splatfest

Nintendo's announcement confirmed the end of regular content updates for Splatoon 3. However, festive events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will remain, along with ongoing monthly challenges and balance patches as needed. The official Twitter (X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close... Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue... Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."

This announcement followed the Grand Festival event on September 16th, commemorated by a video showcasing past Splatfests and the Deep Cut trio. Nintendo's farewell message, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!", has only amplified the anticipation for what's next.

Splatoon 3's two-year run has ended its active development phase, prompting renewed rumors of a Splatoon 4. Fans have pointed to possible easter eggs or hints within the Grand Festival event, speculating on a new city setting for the potential sequel. One fan, responding to images of a futuristic city within the game, questioned if it was "Inkopolis" or a possible location for Splatoon 4. Others dismissed these as simply existing game assets.

While no official announcement exists, rumors of Splatoon 4 development for the Switch have circulated for months. The Grand Festival's status as Splatoon 3's final major Splatfest further fuels these rumors, mirroring past Final Fests' influence on subsequent sequels. The possibility of a "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4 has also been discussed. For now, however, fans will have to await official confirmation from Nintendo.
