Capcom's recent update to its iOS and iPadOS ports of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village has introduced an unwelcome change: mandatory online DRM. While updates often improve optimization or compatibility, this update requires an internet connection to verify game ownership upon launch. This means offline play is no longer possible. Before the update, these games functioned perfectly offline. Now, launching the game without an internet connection results in the game closing.

This forced online check, even for already purchased games, is a significant drawback. While some players may not be affected, this mandatory online DRM negatively impacts the user experience and diminishes the value proposition of these premium-priced ports. Hopefully, Capcom will reconsider this implementation and find a less intrusive method for verifying purchases. The frequency of this check—every launch—is particularly problematic.

The games remain free to try before purchase. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews can be found here, here, and here.
