Sony's Latest Patents: AI-Powered Gameplay and a DualSense Gun Attachment

Sony has filed two intriguing patents aimed at enhancing the gaming experience. These innovations involve an AI-powered camera to predict player actions and a gun-style attachment for the DualSense controller.

AI-Driven Lag Reduction:

The "Timed Input/Action Release" patent details an AI-powered system utilizing a camera to monitor player movements and controller usage. This AI, described as a "machine learning-based model," anticipates the player's next inputs. Alternatively, the system could interpret partial controller inputs to infer player intent.

The primary goal is to mitigate online gaming lag by proactively processing inputs. By predicting player actions, the system aims to reduce latency, a persistent challenge in online gaming.

Enhanced Gunplay with DualSense Attachment:

A second patent focuses on a trigger attachment designed for more realistic gunplay in FPS and action-adventure games.

This attachment transforms the DualSense controller into a gun-like peripheral. Players hold the controller sideways, using the space between the R1 and R2 buttons as the sight, and the trigger to simulate firing. The patent suggests compatibility with other devices, including the PSVR2 headset.

While Sony boasts a vast patent portfolio (78% of its 95,533 patents are active), it's important to note that patents don't guarantee product release. Whether these innovative concepts will become reality remains to be seen. Past Sony patents have explored adaptive difficulty, a DualSense controller with integrated earbuds, and a temperature-sensitive controller reflecting in-game events.
