Disney veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney+ to bring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to life in a new series. Favreau will leverage his expertise in live-action and animation, serving as both writer and producer. While plot and casting details remain under wraps, this project promises a unique blend of styles.

Oswald, though a pivotal figure in Disney history, had a surprisingly brief stint with the company. Created by Walt Disney, he starred in 26 silent cartoons (1927-1928) before a rights dispute led to his departure and the subsequent creation of Mickey Mouse. (For a deeper dive into Disney's history, check out our in-depth article.) Disney reacquired Oswald's rights in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022. This new series signifies a significant expansion of Oswald's presence beyond a nostalgic symbol. A release date is yet to be announced.

PlayThis project marks a shift for Favreau, who's been deeply involved in newer Disney properties. His contributions to *Star Wars* (The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, Ahsoka) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are well-known. He also directed the 2019 *Lion King* remake and will return to the director's chair for *The Mandalorian* and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.

Interestingly, Oswald's recent cinematic appearance predates this announcement by less than a year. In 2023, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, offered a unique, darker take on the character.
