Orpheus: Liberation Choice Impacts in Baldur's Gate 3

Author : Emily Jan 23,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome and character relationships.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus' fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. This final choice carries immense weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. Successfully navigating these encounters often requires high skill checks (potentially a 30 roll for certain interactions).

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Free Orpheus or Side with the Emperor?

This choice hinges on player preference. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (which the party may fail), the Emperor presents the dilemma within the Astral Prism: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus' demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it might alienate fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might still transform into a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, aided by the Githyanki. He'll even willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.

In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's choice might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.

The Moral High Ground?

Morality depends on player perspective, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, as a Githyanki descendant, is the rightful ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands could seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize their own kind above all else.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts the possibility of sacrifice for victory, even if that means a party member transforms into a Mind Flayer. Ultimately, BG3 offers multiple endings; careful choices can lead to a satisfying resolution for everyone.
