Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Innovation Revealed?
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice
Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has been a rich vein of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at the potential mouse-like functionality.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These designations are not found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, suggests the tape could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to facilitate this mode.
The Legion GO also boasts magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
