Mojang Rejects Minecraft 2: 'No Earth 2 Plan'

Author : Aurora Apr 02,2025

Last year, Minecraft celebrated its 15th anniversary, and despite entering its challenging teenage phase, developer Mojang has confirmed that there are no plans to replace it with a sequel. During a recent visit to their Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the future of the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, provided a clear and amusing response: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."

While the idea of Minecraft 2.0 remains off the table, the survival-crafting phenomenon is set to continue evolving. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend the game's lifespan significantly, aiming to at least double its current age. Ingela Garneij explained, "We've existed for 15 years. We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that."

Mojang's vision is driven by a commitment to innovate while building upon the game's established foundation. However, Garneij acknowledged that the game's age poses some challenges. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," she stated. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]."

Despite these hurdles, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games, showing no signs of slowing down. Mojang has no plans to transition Minecraft to a free-to-play model or to integrate generative AI technology. So, while you won't be playing Minecraft 2 anytime soon, you can look forward to continued updates and innovations.
