Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director
A new director has been chosen for the upcoming Street Fighter movie adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kitao Sakurai, the writer, director, and executive producer behind the comedic series The Eric Andre Show, will helm the Legendary Entertainment project.
Capcom is reportedly deeply involved in the adaptation, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.
This marks the latest attempt to bring the popular video game franchise to the big screen. While the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia remains a cult classic, despite mixed critical reception at the time, this new adaptation promises a fresh take.Casting details are yet to be revealed, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters on the silver screen.
Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of Talk to Me, were attached to the project but left last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist tone, a direction that could appeal to fans who appreciate the game's more cartoonish elements.
In the meantime, players can enjoy the latest installment in the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently added Mai Shiranui to its roster. Read our full review of Street Fighter 6 here.
