Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Canceled
Summary
- Technological advancements led to the cancellation of the planned 10th mainline Dynasty Warriors game.
- Elements from this canceled title, tentatively Dynasty Warriors 10, were incorporated into Dynasty Warriors: Origins to enhance gameplay and strategy.
- Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, offers classic hack-and-slash combat set during the Three Kingdoms Era.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins has an interesting backstory. Its developers initially worked on a tenth mainline installment before canceling it to create this new game. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced its fast-paced combat, a testament to significant technological progress since the project's inception four years prior.
For those without early access, Dynasty Warriors: Origins releases January 17, 2025. True to the series' style since the 2000 sequel, it features free-roaming hack-and-slash combat. Players assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist, interacting with famous figures from China's Three Kingdoms Era.
While many have already played Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Omega Force recently revealed the cancellation of a previous project. In an interview with 4Gamer (translated by SiliconEra), producer Masamichi Oba discussed a canceled "phantom number title." This game, similar in structure to 2011's Dynasty Warriors 7, would have involved clearing stages, a stark contrast to Origins' final form.
Dynasty Warriors 10's Cancellation: Forging a Better Dynasty Warriors
Producer Tomohiko Sho explained that the decision to cancel the tenth game stemmed from witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The team realized the potential of modern hardware and shifted their strategy. However, they retained key elements from previous Dynasty Warriors titles.
According to Oba, aspects of the canceled project found their way into Origins. While abandoning the previous game was challenging, elements like the free-roaming map (a feature Oba had envisioned for the canceled title) and a deeper exploration of the Three Kingdoms storyline were successfully integrated.
