Konami Unveils Mobile Game: Suikoden STAR LEAP

For those unfamiliar, Suikoden first graced the gaming world in 1995. This beloved series, crafted by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami, draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel, Water Margin. Known as Suikoden in Japan, the series is renowned for its rich narratives filled with political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment was released back in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a full revival, fans are getting Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game.

Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden charm with its pixel art style, which you can preview in the teaser trailer below.

The storyline centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt, but his joy is short-lived as disaster strikes and his village is attacked. Driven by the need to restore peace, Hou embarks on a journey with Hisui, his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend driven by a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general turned butler.

While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked some debate within the community. Long-time fans have been eagerly awaiting a proper continuation of the series, and the introduction of a gacha-based mobile game has left some feeling uncertain about the direction Konami is taking.
