Killzone Composer: Fans Seek Casual, Quick Games
The beloved Sony franchise, Killzone, has been on hiatus for quite some time, but there's a renewed call for its revival, backed by none other than its composer, Joris de Man. In a recent chat with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man expressed his hope for the series' return, acknowledging the fans' petitions and the franchise's iconic status.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The form in which Killzone might make a comeback is up for debate. De Man suggested that a remastered collection could be more appealing to fans than a completely new entry. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he explained. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone's unique identity sets it apart from faster-paced shooters like Call of Duty. The series, especially Killzone 2, is known for its slower, weightier gameplay, which was sometimes criticized for input lag on the PlayStation 3. The games are also noted for their dark, gritty atmosphere, which adds to their intense, immersive experience.
Despite the enthusiasm from fans and de Man, recent statements from Guerrilla Games to the Washington Post suggest that the studio might have moved on from Killzone, focusing instead on the Horizon series. However, with over a decade having passed since Killzone Shadow Fall, the longing for a return to the franchise remains strong among a dedicated fan base. Whether or not Killzone will make a comeback, fans can take comfort in knowing they have allies like Joris de Man rooting for them.
