Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players
If Season 5 of MultiVersus doesn't meet expectations, it could mark the end of the game. AusilMV, a well-known insider for game leaks, has shared that a reliable source indicated Season 5 is a critical effort to revive the game's fortunes. While this remains a rumor, the situation appears concerning.
Upon its launch in 2022, MultiVersus enjoyed tremendous success, reaching a peak of 153,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, the player base plummeted by 99% shortly after, prompting Warner Bros. Games to close the project in June 2023, labeling it an "open beta test." Despite a relaunch in May 2024 with updates, the game has struggled to recapture its initial popularity.
The fifth season, set to begin in early February, represents what might be the developers' final opportunity to rekindle player interest. This relaunch, while referred to by the developers as a continuation from the 2022 "beta," aims to breathe new life into the game. The decision to temporarily shut down the game in June 2023, announced in March of that year, left many players, particularly those who had purchased the premium edition to support the developers, feeling disappointed.
