"Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake Set for Imminent Reveal and Release"
Excitement is building as Bethesda is reportedly gearing up to announce a remake of the beloved classic, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, in the coming weeks. According to the reliable leaker NatetheHate, who previously nailed the announcement date for the Nintendo Switch 2, the reveal is expected either this month or next month. This information has been corroborated by VGC, adding credibility to the buzz.
While the exact release date remains somewhat unclear, NatetheHate suggests a launch before June, whereas VGC hints at a potential release as early as April. This eagerly anticipated remake promises to breathe new life into the iconic open-world RPG, offering fans a chance to revisit the enchanting world of Cyrodiil with modern enhancements.
In January, Mp1st shed light on the project after a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, accidentally leaked details. Microsoft, when approached by IGN for comment, remained tight-lipped. According to Mp1st, Virtuos is leveraging Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project, indicating a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple remaster. The remake reportedly includes significant gameplay changes, such as revamped mechanics for Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).
The changes to Blocking were inspired by action games and Soulslikes, aiming to address the original's "boring" and "frustrating" system. Sneak icons are now highlighted, and damage calculations have been revamped. The knockdown effect from depleted Stamina is harder to trigger, and the HUD has been redesigned for clarity. Additionally, hit reactions have been added to enhance responsiveness, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person perspectives.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023 when documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition were made public. These documents listed several unannounced Bethesda projects, including an Oblivion Remaster slated for the 2022 financial year. Other titles mentioned included an Indiana Jones game, Doom Year Zero and its DLC, Project Kestrel, Project Platinum, The Elder Scrolls 6, a Fallout 3 Remaster, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel, Dishonored 3, and additional DOOM Year Zero DLC.
However, many of these projects faced delays or cancellations. Doom Year Zero has been rebranded as Doom: The Dark Ages with a planned launch in May, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn't see the light of day until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6 also missed its projected financial year 2024 release.
The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document for Oblivion suggests a less ambitious project than what is now being reported as a full-blown remake. It appears that Bethesda may have expanded the scope of the project, turning it into a more significant undertaking. Fans will have to wait for the official announcement to see the full extent of these changes.
As for the platforms, with Microsoft now embracing multiplatform releases and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, the Oblivion remake could potentially launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and even the new Switch. If the Switch 2 hits the market around June, Oblivion might be part of its launch lineup, offering a broader audience the chance to explore this revamped classic.
