Deltarune Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, But Release Still Far Off
Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and Deltarune, recently shared a development update in his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, the simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 on PC, Switch, and PS4 is still some time away.
Fox confirmed that Chapter 4 is largely playable, needing only polish. All maps are finished, battles are functional, but minor tweaks remain, including refinements to two cutscenes, balancing and visual improvements to one battle, a background update for another, and improved ending sequences for two more. Despite this, three friends have already played through the entire chapter with positive feedback.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges. Fox noted the added pressure of this being their first major paid release since Undertale, emphasizing the need for meticulous quality assurance. Before launch, the team must complete several key tasks: testing new features, finalizing PC and console versions, Japanese localization, and thorough bug testing.
Chapter 3 development is finished (as per Fox's February newsletter). Interestingly, some team members are already preemptively working on Chapter 5 map drafts and combat elements.
The newsletter included teasers: a snippet of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, Elnina's character description, and a new item, the GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, the increased scope of Chapters 3 and 4 (confirmed to be longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined) sustains excitement. Fox remains optimistic, suggesting future chapter releases will be more streamlined after the launch of Chapters 3 and 4. A specific release date remains unannounced.
