Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers
Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite reports suggesting his return, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his comeback alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU, stating, "I’m happily retired."
Evans' statement to Esquire firmly shuts down the recurring rumors that have circulated since Avengers: Endgame. He acknowledged the persistent speculation, saying, "This always happens...I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre, his appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine was a smaller, comedic role, unlike his central Captain America portrayal.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors' firing, which disrupted Marvel's plans, led to Doctor Doom being cast as the new primary antagonist, played by Robert Downey Jr. This sparked speculation about other original Avengers returning, but currently, no further confirmations exist.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, though he will feature prominently in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
