How To Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

The Armadillo, a passive mob introduced in Minecraft's 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, is found across various warm biomes. Covered in tough scutes, these creatures are key to crafting the new Wolf Armor. Here's how to obtain those crucial Armadillo Scutes.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

Armadillos inhabit warm biomes, spawning in groups of two or three. However, they'll quickly curl into a protective ball if approached too aggressively. Proceed cautiously to avoid this defensive maneuver.

These biomes are prime Armadillo hunting grounds:

• Badlands
• Eroded Badlands
• Savanna
• Savanna Plateau
• Windswept Savanna
• Wooded Badlands

Once you've located an Armadillo, you have two methods for collecting scutes:

Method 1: Patience and Waiting

Similar to collecting chicken eggs, Armadillos naturally shed a single scute every 5-10 minutes. This requires no tools or effort, but can be a slow process, especially if you need many scutes for multiple sets of Wolf Armor.

Method 2: The Brush Method

This popular method uses a crafted Brush. While often used to investigate sand and gravel, a Brush gently collects one scute per use on an Armadillo.

In the Java Edition, a fully durable, unenchanted Brush can be used four times before breaking. In Bedrock Edition, it's five uses. Damaged Brushes can be repaired by combining two broken ones, and enchanted brushes retain their enchantments when repaired on an Anvil.

Brushes can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, and Curse of Vanishing.

To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick. Place these items in the center three slots of a crafting table, vertically stacked (Feather on top).

Approach Armadillos slowly, and use the appropriate button to brush them. The number of scutes you collect depends on the number of Brushes you've crafted.

Once you've gathered six scutes (enough for one suit of Wolf Armor), head to a crafting table to create your canine companion's new protective gear.
