Introducing ScratchJr, the perfect platform for kids aged 5-7 to dive into the exciting world of programming! With ScratchJr, young learners can drag colorful blocks to create their own programs and watch as their characters spring into action, moving, jumping, dancing, and singing. This intuitive app allows children to unleash their creativity by modifying characters using the paint editor, adding their voices and sounds, and even inserting their own photos to bring their stories and games to life.

Inspired by the renowned Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), which is popular among older kids, ScratchJr has been specifically tailored to meet the developmental needs of younger children. Our team has carefully crafted the interface and programming language to align with the cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth of young learners, ensuring a fun and educational experience.

We believe coding is a new form of literacy, just as essential as writing. Coding empowers children to organize their thoughts and express their ideas, breaking down barriers that once made programming seem out of reach for most. ScratchJr is our way of making coding accessible to everyone, fostering a love for technology and creativity from a young age.

As kids engage with ScratchJr, they're not just playing; they're learning crucial skills. They develop problem-solving abilities, design thinking, and sequencing skills that lay the groundwork for future academic success. Moreover, ScratchJr integrates math and language in a fun and engaging context, boosting early numeracy and literacy skills. ScratchJr is a collaborative effort brought to you by the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was implemented with the support of Two Sigma, and the delightful graphics and illustrations were crafted by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
