During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was revealed that the GameCube version of Wind Waker will be coming to the new console. This news sparked discussions about whether Wind Waker HD would also make its way to the Switch 2.

Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, provided some clarity on this matter. In a conversation reported by Tim Gettys on Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, Bihldorff stated that the availability of the original Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) does not preclude a potential port of Wind Waker HD to the Switch 2. Gettys quoted Bihldorff saying, "no, all options are on the table," indicating that nothing has been ruled out.

First Released in 2002

The original Wind Waker was first released on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West. Ten years later, in 2013, Wind Waker HD was released for the Wii U, featuring significant enhancements. These improvements include an upgrade to HD visuals from the original 480p, enhanced lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and other gameplay adjustments. With the GameCube library becoming exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this enhanced version.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are being rebranded as Nintendo Classics. According to Nintendo, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games to be added in the future." These games will also feature in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
