'Uncharted' Creator Reveals Truth About 'Last of Us 2' Muscle-Bound Character
The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part II will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build because the show prioritizes drama over moment-to-moment violent action, unlike the game's mechanics. Abby's physical strength is less crucial, allowing them to cast a superior actress. Druckmann emphasizes the shift in focus: "It's more about the drama. I'm not saying there's no action here. It's just, again, different priorities and how you approach it."
Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that this allows exploration of a "physically more vulnerable" Abby, whose strength lies in her spirit. The adaptation will delve into the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature.
The show plans to adapt Part II over multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's single-season adaptation of the first game. Season 2, comprising seven episodes, will conclude with a natural breakpoint.
The controversial nature of Abby's character in the game led to online harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress). This online abuse even extended to threats against Bailey's family. Due to this, Dever received additional security during filming. Isabel Merced (Dina) comments on the absurdity of the situation: "There's so many strange people in this world because there are people that actually genuinely hate Abby, who is not a real person. Just a reminder: not a real person."
