Take-Two Boss Says It's 'Shown a Willingness to Support Legacy Titles' Amid Questions About the Future of GTA Online Post-GTA 6
The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and enduring popularity, the question of whether it will be replaced or simply updated is a major concern. Will players' investments of time and money be rendered obsolete?
Rockstar's decision to prioritize GTA Online over story DLC for GTA 5 has already caused some fan frustration. Now, the possibility of a "GTA Online 2" or a significantly revamped GTA Online raises the stakes. Many fear a complete shutdown of the current version, leaving years of progress behind.
This concern prompted IGN to question Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. While he avoided specifics about any new GTA Online iteration, his response offers some insight. He cited the example of NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2, both of which were maintained concurrently in the Asian market. This demonstrates Take-Two's willingness to support legacy titles with active player bases.
Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles... We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."
This suggests that the existence of a potential GTA Online 2 doesn't necessarily mean the end of the original. Continued player engagement could lead Rockstar to maintain support for the current GTA Online alongside any new iteration.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window available, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially given the proximity to the recently announced September release of Borderlands 4. Until then, the future of GTA Online remains a matter of speculation, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for those invested in the current game.
