Suikoden Fans Rejoice With the Announcement of a Suikoden 2 Anime...and a Brand New Mobile Gacha Game
This week, Konami surprised classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream, a welcome event given the franchise's long hiatus from new entries. The announcements were a mixed bag, however, generating both excitement and apprehension within the fanbase.
First, a Suikoden anime, simply titled Suikoden: The Anime, was revealed. Based on Suikoden II, it marks Konami's first animation production. Details remain scarce, including accessibility outside Japan, but a brief scenic preview was shown:
This is undeniably exciting for longtime fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers, provided it receives a wide release.
The second announcement, a new game titled Suikoden: Star Leap, elicited more complex reactions. Boasting stunning visuals reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, with 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds, the game is set chronologically between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, and features the series' iconic 108 Stars.
However, the game's mobile-only release and the inclusion of gacha mechanics and monetization have caused some concern. This departure from the series' history of premium console and PC releases raises questions about potential impacts on gameplay and the ability to collect all 108 Stars. Further details are needed to fully assess this aspect.
Meanwhile, fans can look forward to the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which received a new trailer during the livestream and launches tomorrow, March 6th.
