Rumor: Beloved Nintendo 64 Exclusive Coming to Modern Consoles
Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X
Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates a near-term launch.
The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a remastered port for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new game chapter. This updated version also launched on Steam. The new ESRB rating, however, points towards a next-gen console release. Historically, ESRB ratings precede game releases by only a few months, suggesting a relatively short wait for players eager to experience the game on modern hardware.
The absence of a PC rating in this update doesn't rule out a potential PC release. Furthermore, the possibility of a stealth launch, similar to past Bethesda releases of classic Doom titles, remains a strong possibility given the ESRB's preemptive rating. Modders have also demonstrated the ability to transform classic Doom games into Doom 64 experiences.
Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the Doom franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. While an official release date is anticipated in January, a 2025 launch is highly probable. The release of updated versions of classic Doom titles serves as excellent preparation for the next installment in this iconic series. Stay tuned for official announcements from Bethesda and id Software. (Note: Replace "https://imgs.21qcq.complaceholder_image.jpg" with the actual image URL if available.)
