Ratatan, the highly anticipated spiritual successor to Patapon, has unveiled its official gameplay trailer, showcasing the rhythm-based combat and cooperative action that defined its predecessor. This article delves into the trailer's highlights and the upcoming closed beta test.

Gameplay Trailer Showcases Boss Battles and Co-op Action

The recently released trailer offers a thrilling glimpse into Ratatan's gameplay, featuring an epic battle against a colossal boss crab. The footage emphasizes the game's unique blend of rhythm-game mechanics and side-scrolling action, a hallmark of the Patapon series. A key feature highlighted is the online co-op mode, allowing up to four players to engage in massive battles with over 100 characters simultaneously.

Developed by Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani and featuring the musical talents of original Patapon composer Kemmei Adachi, Ratatan's Kickstarter campaign, launched in 2023, successfully surpassed its console launch stretch goal, ensuring its release on multiple platforms.

Closed Beta Commences February 27, 2025

Ratatan's closed beta test is scheduled to begin on February 27, 2025, as announced via the game's Kickstarter page. Producer Kazuto Sakajiri shared exciting updates, including the impressive milestone of over 100,000 Steam wishlists and positive reception to the Ratatan Original Soundtrack Demo. While the game won't be featured in the upcoming Steam Next Fest, the development team is prioritizing the closed beta and preparing an enhanced demo for the June Steam Next Fest.

Sakajiri detailed the closed beta's scope, revealing that the initial build will include Stage 1, with Stages 2 and 3 added during the month-long testing period. Distribution details for beta access codes will be announced via Discord and X (formerly Twitter).

Ratatan is slated for release in 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. A specific release date remains unannounced.
