PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)

The PS5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, as of mid-January 2025. However, given past trends, this restock is likely temporary, and supplies may quickly dwindle.

The shortage stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Slim models offer a built-in disc drive, forcing users who want to play physical media to purchase the drive separately. This has led to significant demand and persistent stock issues, particularly in the US and UK since late 2024.

While Amazon and PlayStation Direct currently offer the drive at its MSRP of $79.99, availability is limited. PlayStation Direct restricts purchases to one per customer to deter scalpers. A third-party Walmart seller was also found offering the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with very limited stock. Major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock.
