The Pokémon GO Tour Pass: A Free and Paid Option Explained

With Niantic's frequent introduction of in-game tickets and passes, many Pokémon GO players immediately ask about the cost. The new Pokémon GO Tour Pass, however, offers a surprising twist: a free option! But what exactly does it entail?

Understanding the Pokémon GO Tour Pass

Debuting with the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova global event, the Tour Pass introduces a points-based system. Players earn Tour Points by completing various in-game tasks, unlocking rewards, boosting rank, and enhancing event bonuses throughout the Unova event.

The standard Tour Pass is free and automatically granted to players upon the event's commencement on February 24th at 10 AM local time. A paid version, the Tour Pass Deluxe ($14.99 USD or equivalent), is also available, providing an immediate Victini encounter, superior rewards, and accelerated progression through the Tour Pass tiers.

Earning and Utilizing Tour Points

Similar to familiar research tasks, Tour Points are earned by engaging in standard gameplay activities such as catching Pokémon, participating in raids, and hatching eggs. Daily refreshed Pass Tasks offer additional point-earning opportunities during the GO Tour.

Accumulated Tour Points unlock rewards, including items and rank progression within the tiered system. Higher ranks unlock progressively better rewards such as Pokémon encounters, Candy, Poké Balls, and more. Rank also boosts Catch XP bonuses during the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova event, with multipliers of 1.5x (Tier 2), 2x (Tier 3), and 3x (Tier 4). While Niantic remains tight-lipped on all rewards, a Zorua encounter (with a special background) is confirmed for the highest tier of the free Pass.

The Lucky Trinket: A Deluxe Reward

The Tour Pass Deluxe culminates in a unique item: the Lucky Trinket. This single-use item magically transforms a friend (at least Great Friends level) into a Lucky Friend, enabling a Lucky Pokémon trade without requiring Best Friends status. Note that Lucky Trinkets obtained during GO Tour: Unova expire on March 9, 2025.
