Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He made this statement during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor, where he won for his role in Dream Scenario.

According to Variety, Cage emphasized his belief that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition. He argued that even minimal AI manipulation of an actor's performance poses a significant threat to the integrity and authenticity of art, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic merit.

"The job of all art," Cage stated, "is to hold a mirror to the human condition through a thoughtful and emotional process of recreation. A robot can't do that." He further warned that allowing AI to dictate artistic expression would lead to a loss of heart, edge, and genuine human response, resulting in art dictated by robotic parameters rather than human experience. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.

Cage's concerns echo those of other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI has been used to recreate performances, even in major video game titles. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have voiced similar concerns, highlighting the potential for AI to negatively impact actors' livelihoods.

The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder has advocated for embracing AI technology in filmmaking rather than resisting its adoption.
