Minecraft 2: Original Creator Hints at Announcement
Minecraft's original creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in a recent X (formerly Twitter) poll. The poll, posted on January 1st, 2025, revealed Notch is developing a game blending roguelike and first-person dungeon crawler elements. However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.
The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired project, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. Notch subsequently confirmed his seriousness, stating he "basically announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the massive success of the original Minecraft and expressed enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project.
It's important to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project must avoid direct IP infringement. Notch reassured fans that he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and will proceed accordingly.
He also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating spiritual successors, acknowledging their unpredictable nature. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the fan-favorite option due to its potential for success.
While awaiting Notch's potential Minecraft sequel, fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US (2026 and 2027) and the release of the "Minecraft Movie" later in 2025.
