Larian Studios Shifts Focus to Next Game, Enters 'Media Blackout'

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that it is now fully focused on its next game, entering what it describes as a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 this year, the studio's "full attention" is on their next big project.

Reflecting on their journey, Larian boss Swen Vincke recently took to Twitter to express his nostalgia and excitement about the studio's future. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke tweeted, hinting at more to come. In a follow-up statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen and the team's focus is on crafting a new title, distinct from any sequels to Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dungeons & Dragons games.

While details about Larian's next game remain scarce, it's clear that it will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or another D&D game. Instead, it's a brand new project that the studio is eager to explore after failing to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.

In November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next project, expressing excitement about pushing boundaries. "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries," he said, responding to Baldur’s Gate 3’s numerous nominations at The Game Awards.

Additionally, in July 2023, before Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch, Vincke mentioned to IGN that a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series is also in the works, though fans should not expect it immediately. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," Vincke stated, emphasizing the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3.

With Larian's history in fantasy RPGs, speculation abounds about the nature of their next game. Could it be a venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps an entirely new genre? While the possibilities are exciting, it seems we may have to wait years before getting a clear picture of what Larian has in store.
