Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Wears Its FF and Persona Influences on Its Sleeves
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, the game uniquely blends turn-based combat with real-time elements.
The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the key influences behind Expedition 33. While acknowledging the stylistic and nostalgic appeal of titles like Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler, Broche emphasized the profound impact of the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries 8, 9, and 10, on the game's core mechanics and design philosophy.
Expedition 33's combat system demands quick reflexes. Players issue commands in a turn-based fashion but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks. This dynamic approach evokes the feel of titles like Persona and Sea of Stars. The game's narrative centers around preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death through her art.
Exploration in Expedition 33 offers complete character control. Players seamlessly switch between party members and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with unconventional strategies and team compositions.
The development team aims to create a game that resonates deeply with players, mirroring the impact classic JRPGs had on their own lives. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
