Chrono Trigger Marks 30th Anniversary with Year-Long Releases
Square Enix has proudly announced that the iconic JRPG, Chrono Trigger, has reached its remarkable 30-year milestone. To celebrate this significant anniversary, the company is gearing up to unveil a series of projects over the coming year. While the specifics of these projects remain under wraps, the anticipation suggests they might encompass more than just the game itself, possibly touching on other media or collaborations.
This news has ignited a flurry of excitement and speculation within the fanbase, many of whom have been eagerly awaiting a comprehensive remaster or a release on modern consoles. Despite being celebrated as one of the most cherished JRPGs ever, Chrono Trigger has yet to see a full remake or even a PlayStation re-release since its PS1 port back in 1999. Over the years, it has been made available on PC and mobile platforms, but fans are still holding out for a definitive modern version. With Square Enix's history of revisiting its classic titles, there's always a glimmer of hope.
In the meantime, the only confirmed anniversary event is a special livestream concert dedicated to the game's legendary soundtrack. This concert will be streamed on YouTube on March 14th at 7:00 p.m. PT and will continue into the early hours of the next morning.
For those new to the series, Chrono Trigger is a groundbreaking time-traveling RPG developed by an all-star team, including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest mastermind Yuji Horii, and the legendary Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama.
First launched in 1995 for the Super Famicom and SNES, the game follows protagonist Crono and his diverse group of companions as they traverse various time periods—from a prehistoric era filled with dinosaurs to a dystopian future dominated by an alien force. Throughout their journey, players will recruit allies, manipulate historical events, and confront one of the most memorable final bosses in video game history.
This 30th anniversary marks a monumental occasion, and although there's no official word yet on a remake or a console port, Square Enix's announcement keeps the possibilities alive. To stay in the loop with the latest updates, be sure to follow Chrono Trigger's official X page.
