Former Bayonetta Origins Director Signs with PlayStation's Housemarque
PlatinumGames Loses Another Key Developer to Housemarque
The departure of Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, from PlatinumGames to Housemarque, adds to the growing concerns surrounding PlatinumGames' future. This follows the high-profile exit of Hideki Kamiya, creator of the Bayonetta franchise, in September 2023. Kamiya's departure, attributed to creative differences, fueled speculation about the studio's direction. His subsequent announcement as the lead developer for Capcom's Okami sequel only intensified these concerns.
Further adding to the uncertainty, several other key PlatinumGames developers reportedly deleted all references to the studio from their social media profiles around the same time. Tinari's move to Helsinki, Finland, and his recent LinkedIn update confirming a lead game designer position at Housemarque, confirms at least one of these departures.
Tinari's new role at Housemarque, the studio behind the acclaimed Returnal, suggests he'll be contributing to their currently unannounced new IP. While Housemarque's next project remains shrouded in secrecy, a reveal isn't anticipated before 2026.
The impact of these high-profile departures on PlatinumGames remains to be seen. While the studio is celebrating Bayonetta's 15th anniversary, potentially hinting at a new installment, the future of Project GG, a new IP previously led by Kamiya, is now uncertain. The studio's current trajectory is unclear, leaving fans wondering about the fate of its upcoming projects.
