My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Author : Jacob Mar 14,2025

I'm generally practical with my money. Essentials get bought, and the occasional discounted video game might sneak in, but that's usually it. It wasn't until last year that I even considered a LEGO set—a truly unnecessary purchase! I loved them as a kid, but somewhere along the line, I grew out of it.

Part of that is LEGO's hefty price tag. While some sets are under $25, movie or game tie-ins are significantly more expensive. That's why the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant took so long to convince me. It's been on sale for under $50 since October, but I only recently decided my desk needed a new, whimsical potted plant.

I initially considered this set after seeing IGN's build. Being a Mario fan since practically the beginning, it seemed the perfect way to show my love for the franchise. LEGO's botanical line has lovely flower sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.

Having built it, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It constantly reminds me of the Mushroom Kingdom and my little Piranha Plant I've been "cultivating" during work. Beyond the finished product, the build itself was enjoyable. It took an afternoon, but remained engaging the whole time. It's my only Nintendo LEGO set, but this experience makes me want more.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

As mentioned, LEGO is pricey. With adult-focused sets costing $200+, it's easy to overspend on something amazing. Unless you're independently wealthy, there's a line between a treat and financial ruin. This Mario set, under $50, felt justifiable. The hours spent building it, and the daily happiness it brings, make it worthwhile. Is that happiness worth over $50? Probably. But that's my limit.
